MAVERICK

My heart pounds in my chest as I park my truck outside Londyn’s apartment. All day long I’ve thought about my plans for tonight. Wondered if she’d take my flowers and throw them in the trash. Or if she’d flee town just to avoid going out on a simple date with me.

But when I see her emerge from the front door of the building, my heart stops.

Though it might be fun to see Londyn in a dress, I don’t think it’s her style. I fucking love her black leather leggings and loose purple top that matches the streak in her hair. The one that promises easy access to her tits if she lets me later.

“Londyn, you look—”

“Don’t.” She holds up a hand to stop me. “Don’t ruin this with false flattery.”

I spent most the day repairing fence, which left me with loads of time to wonder about Londyn and her past. About the men who’ve mistreated and underappreciated her. The assholes who’ve left her jaded and more fragile than she lets on. “You’re beautiful, Londyn. I’m not going to keep my mouth shut when I fucking mean it.”

Her eyes sparkle with both surprise and a hint of flattery.

I want more than anything to kiss her. To pull her into my arms and leave her breathless before we even get going. But I resist, hoping the anticipation doesn’t kill us both. I don’t know if it was the flowers or something else that’s softened her jagged edges tonight.

I hope it’s me.

“Ready to go?”

“Where are we going exactly?”

I open her door, chuckling when she glares at my extended hand. She ignores it and helps herself inside the passenger seat. “It’s a surprise.”

“Are those the words I should have etched on my headstone?”

“Half a dozen people in this town know exactly where we’re going.” Chloe wasn’t the only one to offer up advice when it came to this date. Or to Londyn. The town has fallen in love with her, and for some reason, they seem to trust that I’m the one who’ll win her heart. Of course, there’s the subtle threat that if I break it, they might murder me in my sleep.

The drive to the lookout point is shorter than expected. Within minutes of leaving the town limits, we’re there. To my utter surprise, we’re alone.

“It’s such a beautiful night,” Londyn says as I back the truck up so we can use the tailgate as a seat to admire the view. “I can’t believe we’re alone.”

“I’d be lying if I said I was sad about that.”

In minutes, the blankets are spread out, the wine poured, and the spread of appetizers Chloe packed us at the ready.

“Tell me, Maverick,” Londyn says, popping a grape into her mouth and chewing. She softly kicks her legs off the side of the tailgate, making me well aware the gap between us is nearly nonexistent. “What makes you different?”

“Guess you’ll have to stick around a while and find out.” I drop my hand behind her and lean back on it.
